The Language Police

Sometimes I swear the fuddy-duddies of cyberspace are like the old Parisians. Every time they get their feathers a bit ruffled it's "la patrie en danger" and off to the barricades. Probably makes them feel better, but it doesn't accomplish much.
One of the most popular targets for fuddy-duddy tantrums is the fact that language changes and evolves. Can't have that, now, can we? All the laws of grammar and spelling are eternally carved in stone. Never mind that none of said laws are more than a couple centuries old and spelling's always been hit or miss. Their writ never extended much farther than college campuses anyway. Good riddance.
As far as I'm concerned, the English language is beautiful, but too complicated for its own good. A bit of help from texting shorthand is all to the good.
